YouTube agency or freelance editor? What each costs, what you get, and when each one fits.

Short answer

Hire a freelance editor if you already know what to film, write your own titles and only lack editing hours. Hire an agency if you want someone else to own the decisions: topics, scripts, packaging, publishing and what the videos bring in. An editor costs less per month: on Upwork, hourly profiles start at $5 an hour and monthly channel management is listed at $800 to $3,500 (October 2026). A serious agency runs $3,000 to $12,000 a month according to one published 2026 guide. The real difference is who decides, and how many of your own hours stay with you.

The difference in one line

A freelance editor turns your footage into a finished video; an agency decides which videos to make, makes them, and measures what they bring in.

With an editor, you send the raw footage and get a file back. Everything before the edit stays with you: the topic, the research, the script and the filming. So does most of what comes after it: the title, the thumbnail, the description, the upload and reading the numbers. Some editors take on thumbnails or Shorts as well. Few take on the decisions.

An agency starts a step earlier, with research into what already works in your field, and ends a step later, with a monthly read of which videos brought in inquiries. That is where most of the price difference comes from.

Side by side

The main difference is scope, and with it who carries the decisions; cost and your own time follow from that.

What a freelance editor costs, and what that buys

A freelance editor is the cheapest way to get your videos edited: on Upwork, hourly profiles for this kind of work start at $5 an hour, and monthly channel management projects are listed at $800 to $3,500 (October 2026).

Editing is also sold on subscription by studios. Mark Studios, for example, publishes editing plans from $750 to $3,500 a month, where the $2,000 plan covers four videos, titles and SEO, and eight Shorts. Scripts, filming and posting are not included. That is good value for editing. It is not a channel strategy, because nobody in that setup decides what you should film next or checks whether last month's videos brought in a single client.

The cost that does not show up on the invoice is your own time. Research, scripting, filming, the title, the thumbnail and the upload stay on your calendar, every week.

What an agency costs, and what that buys

An agency costs more per month because it takes over the decisions, not just the edit. The OverseerOS 2026 pricing guide puts a serious agency at $3,000 to $12,000 a month and the premium end at $12,000 to $50,000 and up, and says itself that these are planning ranges, not universal market rates.

Agencies that publish a monthly price for YouTube, as of October 2026, run from $2,000 (ContentBuck, four videos) to $15,000 (the top of Vireo Video's range), with Playstack at $4,000 a month for done-with-you and TikScale at $5,000 for four videos. Ours: done-for-you retainers from the low four figures a month, month to month, and the Flagship from 6,000 euro a month, in which our crew films with you every month. The agencies by name are in our comparison, and the full breakdown is in what it costs to have your channel run.

When a freelance editor is the right choice

A freelance editor is the right choice when the strategy is already yours and editing hours are the only thing you are short of.

  • You already have formats that bring in clients, and a list of topics for the coming months.
  • You write your own titles and thumbnails, or someone on your team does.
  • You have a few hours each week to plan, film, publish and read the numbers.
  • Budget is the constraint, not your time.

In that case an editor is cheaper than us, and the right call.

When an agency is the right choice

An agency is the right choice when your time is the constraint and you want one party to answer for inquiries, not for files.

  • You run a company and cannot spend a working day a week on video.
  • You do not yet know which videos bring in clients.
  • You want the topics, the packaging and the numbers handled by people who do this every day.
  • You want YouTube and Instagram from the same shoot.

The middle route: a plan or an audit, then your own editor

If you want to keep working with an editor, give them a better brief. Our Channel Plan for 495 euro analyses your channel and lays out twelve videos for the next twelve weeks, so your editor knows what is coming. The channel audit and optimisation for 950 euro also fixes your channel and your twenty best videos within five working days, with money back if it is not good.

Both are credited against your first month if you start the retainer within 60 days. Every price is on our pricing page.

Where we sit

We are an agency: a team of six running founder-led YouTube and Instagram, done for you and in your voice, for founders and experts with a high-ticket offer. You film about a shoot day a month and stay the face and the source; we do the research, scripts, editing, packaging, publishing and the monthly read on inquiries. We work with 10 active clients in the United States, Dubai, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Our best-documented case, stated exactly: two e-commerce founders went from $12.5K to $80K per month in 7 months, from about 50 to about 320 community members at $250, almost all of it organic, mostly through YouTube and Instagram. The full case. If you only need editing, an editor is cheaper than us. If you want the decisions off your plate, that is the job we do.

Should I hire a YouTube agency or a freelance editor?
Hire a freelance editor if you already know what to film and only lack editing hours. Hire an agency if you want someone else to decide what to make, package and publish it, and report on the inquiries it brings in. For founders who are short on time, the decisions are usually the expensive part, not the edit.
How much does a freelance YouTube editor cost?
On Upwork, hourly profiles start at $5 an hour and monthly channel management projects are listed at $800 to $3,500 (October 2026). Studios that sell editing on subscription, such as Mark Studios, publish plans from $750 to $3,500 a month.
How much does a YouTube agency cost?

Can I start with an editor and switch to an agency later?
Yes. Many founders start with an editor and switch once their own time becomes the bottleneck. A Channel Plan or a channel audit in between gives your editor a better brief, and with us it is credited against your first month if you start the retainer within 60 days.
Do I still have to film if I hire an agency?
With a founder-led agency, yes: you stay the face and the voice of the channel. With us that is about one shoot day a month, a few hours to a full day, plus short checks on scripts and final edits.
