A personal brand, not a personal AI brand. Where AI helps, and where it costs you clients.

TL;DR

Use AI as the engine under your content, never as your voice. We use AI tools every day for research, data and planning, and not a line of the scripts in our videos comes from AI. A language model writes what is statistically likely, and statistically likely sounds like everyone. The whole point of a personal brand is that nobody else could say it.

The tool that makes everyone faster makes everyone the same

AI makes content faster for everyone, and that is exactly why AI-written content all starts to sound alike. If everyone feeds the same tool in the same way, the same thing comes out the other end.

A language model is trained to pick the most likely next word: the average of everything that already exists. It does that job well. But the average is exactly what you do not want when the goal is that people remember you for your field.

You will recognise it by now: posts that read smoothly and catch on nothing, sentences that are correct and do nothing. That is not badly written. It is written too averagely.

Where AI helps, and that is a lot

AI is very good at the work under the content: research, data and planning. We are not sceptical about AI at all, and our whole way of working runs on it under the hood.

  • Research. What performs in a niche, which competitor videos break out, which topics keep coming back. Work that used to take an afternoon now takes minutes.
  • Data. Reading the numbers, spotting patterns, seeing which hooks worked and where retention drops in a video, and why.
  • Planning. Structure, content calendars and a rough order. The admin that otherwise stays undone.

That is real work, and it saves real time. The engine is not the problem. The problem is what people try to replace with it.

Where AI never goes: the script

The line is the script: the hook, the story and the sentence only you can say. No model writes those for our clients.

The reason is simple. Your example from the deal that fell through, your opinion on what your industry gets wrong, the number only you know because it is your business: none of that is in any training set. A model cannot produce it, because it has never been said. That is exactly where the value is.

The whole point of a personal brand is that nobody else could say it.

Why statistically likely hurts you

Generic feels safe and gets forgotten, while specific feels risky and is what people remember. AI almost always picks the safe side, because that is where the average sits. You have to go the other way.

Our own case shows it: two e-commerce founders went from $12.5K to $80K per month in 7 months, from about 50 to about 320 community members at $250, almost all of it organic, mostly through YouTube and Instagram. That growth did not come from smooth content. It came from two founders telling their real story on camera, in their own words, which is the part no AI could have written. The full case.

A one-question test

Before anything goes live, ask one question: could a competitor post this exact sentence? If they could, it is too generic. Cut it and say what only you can say.

That is how we keep the line clear. AI may touch everything except the sentence only you can say: it researches, structures and reads the numbers, and it never decides how you think about your field. That is what done for you, in your voice means to us: the founder stays the source, and the team builds the engine around it. How we build personal brands for founders, and what personal branding means for a founder.

Does Menno Kater use AI?
Yes, every day, for research, data and planning. Not for the script. The voice stays the founder's.
Should AI write my content?
Not the script, if you are building a personal brand. AI writes the statistical average, and the average sounds like everyone. The point of a personal brand is that nobody else could say it.
What can I use AI for in personal branding?
Research (what performs in your niche), data (reading numbers and patterns) and planning (structure and content calendars). It is the engine under your work, not your voice.
Why does AI-generated content all sound the same?
Because a language model is trained to pick the most likely next word, which is the average of everything that already exists. That is useful for speed and fatal for standing out.
Can an agency use AI and still keep my voice?
Yes, if the line is clear: AI handles research, data and planning, and every hook, story and opinion comes from you, in your own words. Ask any agency where it draws that line before you hire it.
